Comparing Performance
You can expect some impressive power for a mid-size truck to haul and tow. While it doesn’t have the strength of a full-size pickup, you’ll still get the capability you need for the average person. Both the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma feature a gas engine, but the Frontier offers more horsepower and torque with its 3.8L V6 over the 2.4L four-cylinder of the Tacoma. Surprisingly, the Frontier stays competitive with the Tacoma on fuel efficiency, losing just a couple of miles per gallon with the extra power. Paired with the Nissan’s engine is a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Comparing Technology
Both Nissan and Toyota provide some of the basics with the base trim but save the more spectacular features for higher trims. With that being said, the Nissan Frontier comes with an infotainment system and an eight-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth on all trims. The Frontier and Tacoma include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay across the lines with optional navigation. Advanced safety technology is included in both models, such as Brake Assist and Automatic Braking. Forward Collision Warning is also standard while Blind Spot System is available. Nissan makes the Front Night Vision System available while it’s not an option on the base Tacoma.
Comparing Capability
Both trucks are ideal for use in many applications. However, the Nissan Frontier may be the more practical choice with the option of two rows to seat up to four compared to one row and two seats for the Tacoma base trim. You’ll also travel further between fuel-ups in the Nissan with a 21-gallon tank as opposed to the 18-gallon tank for Toyota. You can tow a trailer or camper with either truck, but the Nissan Frontier provides more than 3,000 pounds of towing capacity over the Tacoma at 6,690 pounds compared to 3,500 pounds. Nissan included 1,646 pounds of payload over 1,460 pounds for the Toyota truck. The design of the Nissan Frontier makes it a practical choice in a variety of environments. Even with the second row, front-row passengers have about the same space as they would in the Toyota truck. Frontier comes with a smaller turning radius to make it easier to maneuver in city traffic.
You’ll find some impressive models in the mid-size pickup category if you need a capable truck. The Nissan Frontier stands up to the test for pickup drivers who want versatility and capability without compromising comfort and convenience.
